Mercedes grow up in Veracruz, Mexico. She came to Houston, Texas in 1988 and worked as domestic workers for 8 years. In 2003, Mercedes began to work as janitor in the George Brown Convention Center and then in 2005 on San Felipe. In 2006, Mercedes and her coworkers fought for a contract and benefits. They went on strike for a month and in November 2006 they achieved the first contract for janitors in the area. Mercedes was affiliated as SIEU member and in 2007 Mercedes became member organizer of SEIU Local 1. The same year she supported the janitors’ organizing in Minnesota. In 2008, Mercedes participated in an organizing exchange in Wisconsin and as result she became the union steward of her building. In 2011 Mercedes worked with Mi Familia Vota promoting the Hispanic vote and organizing people in the community. At the same time she worked in Good Jobs Great Houston developing leadership in community organizers. Mercedes has served as volunteer with the League of Women Voters to register new citizens in Houston.
